We Arusha Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (AUWSA), endeavor to provide affordable, sufficient, safe and clean water and to have an efficient and sustainable water supply system which is capable of catering for the current and future customers’ needs.

AUWSA Water Sources

Arusha is supplied with water from three different sources namely springs and boreholes and river Nduruma. The spring sources include Olesha - Masama springs along Themi River located 4 km North of the City and Ngarendolu springs located within the Municipality.

1.0 Deep Boreholes.
There are 12 deep wells (boreholes) located in the northern part of the Town (Arumeru District) and three boreholes located within the City area.  The boreholes contribute 31% of the daily water production.

OPERATIONAL STATUS: - The Borehole is non operational. It collapsed in 1995 due to the occurrence of an earthquake. Currently the activity of drilling a new borehole in the same area is in the final stages. The new borehole project meant to utilize the existing infrastructure.

OPERATIONAL STATUS: - The Borehole experienced high Fluoride contents which forced the Authority to close its operation. The national (Tanzanian) acceptable fluoride content is 4-ppm (Parts per million or /mg/l) while international acceptable content is 1.5 ppm. The Borehole experienced up to 9.5-ppm and there fore the option was to abandon it for the purpose of safeguarding water quality produced and supplied by AUWSA.

MATATIZO: - kupungua kwa uwezo wa kisima kwa kiwango kikubwa, kutokana na tetemeko la ardhi lililotokea mwaka 1999 na kubadilisha mwelekeo wa mkondo wa maji.Tunapanga kuchimba kingine cha pili katika mkondo huo huo wa maji ardhini yaani “acquifer” katika eneo la Kiranyi II.Kazi ya uchimbaji wa kisima hiki sasa hivi inaendelea kwa kutumia Wakala wa Uchimbaji wa Visima na Mabwawa “DDCA” chni ya Wizara ya Maji na Umwagiliaji.

2.0. Spring Sources.
AUWSA spring sources are located in two different areas i.e. Ngarendolu Spring Sources located within Arusha City Ngarenaro Ward near St. Elizabeth (Kwa Father Babu) Hospital. Olesha Masama spring sources located at the Northern part of the city in the neighbouring Arumeru district in Olgilai Village. The springs (Olesha Masama) are within Themi River Valley.

3.0. The River Source (Nduruma).
In dealing with the problem of water shortage facing the residents of Arusha City, AUWSA initiated research on how to utilize Nduruma and Malala rivers to produce additional clean and safe water to meet the increasing demand for the City. The research started since 1996.

The research based on both quantity and quality of water in these river sources hence the research proved that water from these two rivers is acceptable quality and quantity wise.

in Arusha City residentsKatika kupambana na hali ya upungufu wa maji kwa ajili ya wakazi wa Jiji la Arusha, Mamlaka ya Majisafi na Majitaka Jiji la Arusha ilianza kufanya utafiti wa wingi na ubora wa maji ya mito Nduruma na Malala kuanzia mwaka 1996 kwa kujenga Geji za kupima wingi wa maji na kuanza kuchukua sampuli za maji na kupima ubora wake. Zoezi hilo liliendelea hadi mwaka 2004.

Wakati huo huo, kwa kuwa wingi na ubora wa maji hayo ulishaonyesha matumaini, usanifu wa mradi ulianza kufanyika kuanzia mwaka 2000 hadi 2001. Baada ya mchakato wa kutafuta Mkandarasi wa kujenga mradi huo kukamilika na hatimaye Kampuni ya “Oriental Construction Company” ya Nairobi kupata zabuni hiyo, kazi ya ujenzi wa mradi wa Nduruma ilianza rasmi mwezi Mei 2004 na kukamilika mwezi Januari 2005.

Mradi huu wa Nduruma una uwezo wa kutoa kiasi cha meta za ujazo 3800 kwa siku japo kiasi hiki huweza kuongewzwa wakati wa mvua ambapo mto hubeba maji mengi.  Mradi huu umeleta nafuu kubwa sana katika mfumo mzima wa usambazaji maji.Hivi sasa,maeneo ambayo hapo awali ilikuwa ni vigumu kuyapatia huduma ya maji hasa wakati wa kiangazi kama vile Baraa,Olorien,Kimandolu na Njiro sasa yanapata huduma hiyo japo kwa mgao inapobidi. Pamoja na hayo,maji yanayozalishwa kutoka visimani sasa yana uwezo wa kupanda eneo la mwinuko la Sakina Juu,Majengo na Urundini.

Kutokana na ukweli kwamba mahitaji ya maji yanazidi kuongezeka kila siku, Mamlaka ya Majisafi na Majitaka Jiji la Arusha imepanga kuchimba visima viwili zaidi, kimoja eneo la Kiranyi na kingine eneo la Ilkilorit. Pamoja na hayo,baada ya kukamilika kwa awamu ya kwanza kwa ujenzi wa maji ya mto Nduruma, ujenzi wa mradi wa mto Malala utatekelezwa wakati wowote mara fedha itakapopatikana kwani usanifu wa mradi huo ulishakamilika.  Hatua hizi zote zikikamilika,hali ya upatikanaji wa maji katika Jiji la Arusha itakidhi mahitaji halisi ya sasa,na kwa malengo ya baadaye lengo ni kukifanyia utafiti chanzo cha Ziwa Duluti ili kama maji yake yanafaa kiwe ndio chanzo cha kudumu na cha uhakika cha Jiji la Arusha.

MFUMO WA MAJITAKA.

4.1. Utangulizi.
Mfumo wa majitaka unajumuisha mabombataka, mashimo ya ukaguzi na mabwawa ya kusafisha majitaka.  Mfumo huu wa majitaka ulijengwa na kuanza kazi mwaka 1970 na ulikuwa unaendeshwa na Halmashauri ya Manispaa ya Arusha hadi Septemba 1998 ulipokabidhiwa kwenye Mamlaka ya Majisafi na Majitaka kufuatia mabadiliko ya sheria za maji za mwaka 1998.  Mfumo huu ulipokabidhiwa ulikuwa na urefu wa kilometa 26.7 na mashimo ya ukaguzi 458.

Mfumo ulikuwa na mabwawa matano ya kusafisha majitaka na yalikuwa yamejaa makapi hivyo kufanya ubora wa majitaka yaliyosafishwa kuwa haufai kwa matumizi ya aina yoyote. Mabwawa ya kusafisha majitaka yalikarabatiwa na ubora wa majitaka yaliyosafishwa uliongezeka na kuweza kukidhi matumizi ya maji kwa shughuli za umwagiliaji.

Uendeshaji wa mfumo wa majitaka unafanywa na wafanyakazi wa AUWSA katika kusafisha, kuzibua mabombataka na ufuatiliaji wa ubora wa majitaka wakati usafi wa mabwawa ya majitaka unafanywa na mkandarasi (Private Service Provider ), ambaye hupatikana kwa njia ya zabuni.  Mfumo wa majitaka unahudumia 16.7% ya wakazi wa Manispaa sawa na watu 41,057 na makusanyo ya malipo ya Ankara za majitaka unafikia wastani wa shilingi million ishirini (20,000,000/=) kwa mwezi.

4.2 Mfumo wa Mabombataka.
Mfumo huu wa majitaka unahusisha mabomba yenye kipenyo kuanzia 100mm hadi 600mm, mabombataka haya ni ya aina ya plastiki,chuma na zege Kwa sasa urefu wa mfumo wa majitaka ni kilometa 43.06 na mashimo ya ukaguzi yapo 723.  Mfumo huu wa mabombataka unahudumia maeneo ya katikati ya mji na baadhi ya maeneo pembezoni mwa mji ambako mabombataka yanapita kuelekea kwenye mabwawa.  Mabombata yaliyopo katikati ya mji yamezidiwa nakiasi cha yanayobebwa na kusababisha kuziba mara kwa mara hivyo yanatakiwa kuongezwa ukubwa kwa kuyabadili na baadhi yamechakaa kutokana na umri.

4.3 Mabwawa ya Majitaka.
Kuna mabwawa matano makubwa na mawili madogo kwa ajili ya kusafisha Majitaka katika hatua mbalimbali. Wastani wa majitaka kiasi cha meta za ujazo 5,600 kwa siku huingia na kusafishwa kwenye mabwawa haya. Magari ya majitaka yanamwaga majitaka katika mabwawa na kulipia shilingi 2,000/= kwa magari madogo na shilingi 5,000/= kwa magari makubwa kwa safari moja.

Ufuatiliaji kwa kuchunguza sampuli za majitaka hufanywa na Mamlaka kila wiki na pale inapoonekana kuna matizo, ufuatiliaji wa vyanzo vinavyoingiza majitaka hufanyika ili kudhibiti ubora wa majitaka eneo la mwanzo. Kwa ujumla ubora wa majitaka unakidhi viwango vya umwagiliaji.  Mabwawa haya yanatakiwa kuondolewa makapi kila baada ya miaka sita hadi nane.

4.4 Mipango ya baadaye.
Katika mpango mkakati wa miaka mitano (2004-2009 )uliopitiwa upya na kufanyiwa marekebisho (2008-2013), Mamlaka imeainisha maeneo mbalimbali ili kuboresha huduma hii.Inatarajiwa kuwa ifikapo mwaka 2013, 15% ya wakazi wa Manispaa watapata huduma ya uondoaji majitaka.  Mfumo wa mabombataka ya kusafisha majitaka utapanuliwa katika maeneo ya mjini na pembezoni mwa mji. Aidha mpango wa ujenzi wa mfumo mwingine wa majitaka utaandaliwa ili kuhudumia eneo la Njiro na kuweza kuhudumia asilimia thelathini ( 30%) ya wakazi wa Manispaa ya Arusha kama ilivyo
