Customers are the most important visitors on our premises. They are not dependant on us, we are dependant on them. They are not an interruption of our work, they are the purpose of it. They are not outsiders to our business, they are part of it. We are not doing them a favour by serving them, they are doing us a favour by giving us an opportunity to do so.

Water Supply

Arusha is supplied with water from three different sources namely springs, boreholes and a river (Nduruma). The spring sources include Olesha - Masama springs along Themi River located 4 km North of the City and Ngarendolu springs located within the City. There are 12 deep wells (boreholes) located in the northern part of the City (Arumeru district) and three boreholes located within the City area and Nduruma River in Arumeru district.

The boreholes contribute 30% of the daily water production whereas the springs contribute 55% while the river contribution ranges at 15%.

The production capacity fluctuates seasonally from an average of 32,000m 3/day in dry season to 60,000m 3/day during the rainy season.

As of March, 2009, the average daily water production has dropped from 36,000m 3/day whereas the daily water demand is estimated to the tune of 53,030m 3/day.

This underlines the fact that additional water sources are required in order to ensure adequate supply throughout the year including during dry seasons. The low production is also attributed by unreliable electricity supply for running pumping tests within borehole sources.

The water distribution system comprises of 273km of pipeline with diameters ranging from 32mm (1½”) to 700mm (28”), the pipe materials are of very old Cast Iron, Ductile Iron, PVC and Polythene. The system also includes storage reservoirs with a total capacity of 14,500m 3, 28 Break Pressure Tanks, 46 Water Kiosks and 59 standpipes.

The present water supply service level is 98% of the City residents. The remaining 2% covers the population located in Rural and Peri-Urban areas where the City Water supply network has not yet reached, and are using their own sources. (i.e. some parts of Baraa, Terrat, Olorien and Sombetini Wards)

Water quality from both sources (i.e. springs, wells and the river) is maintained within the required Tanzanian Standards. For safety purposes, water treatment is done using calcium hypochlorite (65-70% chlorine) and water quality monitoring is done by collecting samples from the distribution system and checking for free chlorine on weekly basis and so far the results have always been excellent.

This practice has enabled AUWSA to acquire certification for supplying “POTABLE WATER” from Tanzania Bureau of Standards (i.e. TZS 789:2003). In that respect, have a valid license renewed annually. (Annex II A and B).
