The German government has pledged to improved infrastructure that would enable the Arusha Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (AUWSA) to deliver adequate services to the Arusha Municipality.
The Environment Committee of the German parliament chairperson Petra Bierwirth expressed the commitment when addressing the media after a tour of water sources that are managed by AUWSA.
He said his committee was highly impressed by AUWSA's efforts to supply the people of Arusha with clean and safe water and in view of that Germany has seen the need to support the authority in order to realize its goals and targets.
Mr Bierwirth said clean and safe water is crucial to every human being adding that Germany felt obliged to help people in developing countries to realize that need.
He said Tanzania was one of the two countries that the parliamentary committee, comprising of legislators from various countries, toured that would be given priority in German support of water and environment projects.
AUWSA's managing director Asili Munisi said the target of the water authority was to collect about Tsh 8.7 billion by 2013 which would be used to meet some of the challenges facing the authority.
Among the challenges facing the water authority are tear and wear of the infrastructure and the few water sources that do not meet the needs of Arusha residents and businesses.
The authority is bracing to develop new water sources at Kiranyi, Elkiroriti,,Malala river and Kisongo.
