Theme for this Year: " WATER FOR DEVELOPMENT"

Declaration No. 47/193 of the United Nations was proclaimed in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. It urged all members states to honour the 22nd day of March of each year to be the International Water Day. In order to emphasize its importance, every year there is a theme to mark the day. This year's theme is "WATER FOR DEVELOPMENT."

Due to its importance, Tanzania has also resolved to do various activities in order to commemorate Maji Week. The activities cover the period between March 16th and March 22.

Arusha Urban Water and Sewerage Authority (AUWSA) is joining other people of the world to commemorate Maji Week by emphasizing protection of water sources in the Themi River Valley so as to maintain environment, which would enable clean and safe water for the development of people of Arusha.

As you all know water is a vital resource for individuals and the nation as a whole. The public requires adequate water for development.

Sewerage removal is equally important economically and in development since it eradicates epidemics, prevents pollution and enhances good environment in residences, business premises, factories and institutions. Hence, in a bid to give ample opportunity for full participation in economic development, an acceptable means of sewerage removal should be adapted.

In order to expedite networking of sewerage systems, it is advised that the adjacent house owners should collaborate in the implementation of sewerage removal.

INTERPRETATION OF WATER WEEK THEME

* Water is vital for development of a community. Water is utilized in homes for various applications such as cleaning, cooking and drinking. Such water should be clean and safe in order to prevent the community from contacting diseases caused by unhygienic conditions and lack of clean and safe water for drinking.

* Clean and safe water is required by all communities and institutions to improve the health standards.

* Without adequate water, economic development will not be achieved. Water is required in the factories for processing of various products and driving of machines. Therefore, water facilitates availability of employment in the society.

* Water is utilized to produce energy like electricity for domestic and industrial use.

* In the tourism industry water is needed in order to establish attractive sites for the tourists who come to visit our country.

FOR SUSTAINABLE SERVICE
In order to ensure sustainable service of clean and safe water, it is important to observe the following:

* Since drought and soil erosion are the results of drying water sources and damage, water protection is necessary by avoiding burning of forests, cutting of trees and cultivation near the water sources.

* Water sources protection should go parallel with proper water usage by avoiding unnecessary use of water, which causes water loss.

* Some people use tap water improperly and cause great loss of water, it should therefore be borne in mind that in order to get clean and safe water, great amount of electricity and chemicals are applied in production and treatment.

AUWSA'S ADVICE

AUWSA is taking this opportunity to remind the resident of Arusha Municipality and its suburbs to adhere to the proper use of water as follows:‑

* Do not leave taps open when water is not required.

* To avoid watering gardens using tap water. Clean and safer water is meagre and therefore human use should be given priority.

* Water leakage causes a great loss, should you happen to see a tap or pipe leaking, please notify AUWSA by calling telephone Number 2506124.

* If your water tap is leaking, please repair it immediately in order to avoid further water loss, which will cause you to pay for unconsumed water.

* Unscrupulous customers, do illegal tap re‑connection or do water theft. Should you see such elements please notify our offices immediately. We are sparing no efforts in eradicating such incidents, since much water is being used by people, who do not deserve it and causing honest customers to miss this important service.

OBLIGATION OF ESTEEMED CUSTOMERS

In order to continue getting good service, AUWSA's customers are requested to observe the following:‑

* It is the responsibility of every customer to pay water and sewerage bills. By so doing AUWSA will be enabled to continue improving its services to it's customers.

* Before acquiring a new house, ensure that such house does not have any outstanding water bill, otherwise you will be obliged to settle the full liability.

* If you are a tenant in leased house, please ensure that you settle your bills before vacating the house. We request co‑operation of house owners on this otherwise new tenants will be responsible to pay the outstanding debts. AUWSA will not write‑off such debts.

* If your water system has been disconnected, you are required to pay your outstanding bills, as without doing so, you should be aware that you are causing AUWSA to fail rendering its service improvement.

* The service for new water connection and re‑connection is only rendered by AUWSA's technical office. You should also be aware that AUWSA does not authorise other technicians to do such connections.

* If you are receiving water bills without service being rendered, please notify our offices so that your problem is solved.

* If you are consuming water without bills please be an honest customer by informing AUWSA so that a bill can be prepared for you.

* Bill adjustments are only being effected in AUWSA's offices. Please do not adjust your bills by using services of unauthorized people. They are just cheating you.

* For all your water and sewerage bills, connection or re‑connection of services, ensure that you get an official receipt according to the payment made.

Don't you want to be a good customer? Remember:

" water and sewerage services rendered by AUWSA in the Arusha Municipality are targeted to wage war against poverty and to raise standard of life and development. Please support our efforts by paying your water and sewerage bills promptly.”
